During the early days of Los Angeles, these stairs were intentionally created for pedestrians to reach the trolleys, buses and streetcars that were all over the city. In fact, during the early days of L.A., the city actually had an extensive railway system. Since L.A. had a number of hills, early developers made the homes located at the top of the hills and the staircases would provide them easy access to the trolley systems below.
Perhaps one of the most popular staircases in Silverlake is the staircase known as the Music Box Steps. The stairway is separated into two parts and has a total of 705 steps. This stairway gets its name from a 1932 Laurel and Hardy Film that was famous at the time. In the movie, the actors tried to push a piano up the steps between Vendome Street and Descanso Drive. While there are many set of stairs in Silverlake, this one is the only officially designated staircases in the city. You’ll find the Music Box loop located at the corner of Sunset Blvd and Parkman Ave in Silver Lake.
